Dear Colleagues
I have done microscopical analysis of really similar objects (but in
Lama glama/guanicoe, unfortunately I have not photos at this time) from
Early Formative (early neolithic) in the Atacama's Desert, and have the
same kind of microwears in a experimental ones (with different shape)
used as shuttles over camelidae wool in a loom. A curve in the shape of
the piece some times is VERY helpful at the moment of cross the vertical
strings.
In general, the use of bones over wool, results in very smooth polishes
that even could cover the manufacture wears. Even at 120X in a binocular
microscope, is quite distinctive. I think that the eye of the piece must
have similar ones. I have not tested over antler yet, but I think that
could be similar.
Cheers,
Boris Santander
