[Bonetools] Beading on comb teeth

That would be brilliant! All we would need to do would be to get a grant
for the manufacture of a suitable number of matching combs, share them
out among artifact researchers, we record use, and meet annually to
compare combs! And someone would need to collate the information.

How much do combs cost?

Anne

Subject: Re: [Bonetools] Beading on comb teeth

My friend, the former ownr of the 15 year old bone comb, keeps her long
haair in a bun. She really used the comb in th old days for neatening
her hair in the morning and cleaning it after work in the fields. It
occurs to me that her mother's comb would have been of interest because
her hair is long and very thick. That would mak a difference in degree
of wear as well. There is actually a long-hair society in the States. I
wonder whether it would be an interesting and useful experimen to look
for people to use their combs in a natural way (assuming these are al
hair combs. we could at least provide horn, bone and antler combs and
both double sided simple and double sided complex. It might be a fun
experiment to run for five years however it would require people to mak
the combs and alot of coordination between all of us to do it properly.

Thanks, that's a thought, but might long hair be kept braided for much
of the time and thus tangle less?

Is there a fundamental difference in action between combing long and
short hair? I think managing long hair might well use the whole length
of the teeth but shorter hair wouldn't.

I think that would depend on the thickness of the short hair. The
question is whether combing short hair (<10cm) would affect the comb to
any of the extent that combing long hair (bra strap length or longer)
would. After all long hair takes longer to comb, partially because it
tangles easier than shorter hair.
