Dear list members,

I am currently analysing an animal bone assemblage from a (mainly)
early medieval site in Ireland. I have come across a number of sawn
and chopped off antler tines, which are slightly polished towards the
end.

The polish might of course be due to natural causes. But I also
understand that antler tines were sometimes used as pressure flakers
during flint knapping in prehistoric times and this got me thinking
that these tines might have been used for this purpose, or something
else. I also realise that they might simply be waste of antler
handicraft.

I attach photos of some of the finds. I would be greatful for any suggestions!

Thanks in advance,

Karin Svensson
