Dear Sonia, Francois and Clive,
    Of course, now that you mention it there is also a technique from end of 
the Neolithic in Hungary (and I am sure elsewhere in the region) for 
producing fishhooks from boar tusk that involves drilling holes in a rough 
hook outline which is then refined (see attachment). It is nice that this is a 
technique used on more brittle materials but that two of you have empirically 
'invented' the technique.
