[Bonetools] odd ostrich object

Dear all,
I can add to Sonia's suggestion that the technique she describes was in
wide use in Israel for cutting pottery vessels (i.e., for removing the
upper part of a jar to get a larger opening), especially in the
Roman-Byzantine era.

Dear Alice,

I think that the piece of ostrich shell might not be so much a
functional or decorative object in itself, but a waste piece. If you
want to cut a large circular hole in the egg you could drill a ring of
holes and then break or saw through the narrow gaps between the drill
holes. I've done something like this in wood to attach a lock when I
didn't have the correct tool cut a single hole with a large enough
diameter. This process produces a waste piece like the one you have and
would leave a hole of roughly the right shape which could then be filed
and sanded to form a circular opening.

Happy New Year.

Sonia

Daniella Bar-Yosef sent this message to the Zooarch list but I thought
there might just be someone on the WBRG list who has an idea what this
object is (I have sent the image in the attachment but it can also be
viewed on the link below). I wonder if it could be some kind of inlay
and someone else on the ICAZ mailing list has suggested a pre-form bead.

Hello everyone,

I was asked to comment on an artifact made of ostrich egg shell from a
Roman site in Israel. I would appreciate your help. Has anyone seen
anything similar? I have uploaded the photo in bone comments, see link
below.

Best wishes for 2009,Daniella Bar-Yosef
