Christian,
These look similar to late 19th early 20th century toothbrushes from
South Africa (British Colonial contexts), see attached image. I have
been searching for information on them myself and so far, all I know is
that the handles were made from cattle femurs and the bristles from boar
hairs. Here are some sources that came up on an online search - I
haven't actually gone through any of them yet, but they are worth
checking out.
L’origine merveilleuse des choses de tous les jours, Charles Panati,
Éditions FIRST, 1989.
Le livre mondial des inventions, sous la direction de Valérie-Anne
Giscard d’Estaing, Éditions Fixot, 1996 et 1997.
Weinbeger, Bernhard Wolf. An introduction to the history of dentistry,
with medical, dental, chronology & bibliographic data. St. Louis, C.V.
Mosby Company, 1948.
If anyone has any more information on this, please keep me posted.
