Dear Jessica,
There is a similar ivory knife handle from Aventicum, published first in MAYOR, J., ’Aventicensia 3, Couteau à manche d’ivoire sculpté représentant deux gladiateurs’ Anzeiger für schweizerische Altertumskunde 5 (1903-1904) 117-136. I know another similar bronze knife handle from Épône (, with the same representation of the secutor and retiarius as "stantes missi", a fight ended in a draw.
I wrote a whole chapter on knife handles decorated with gladiators in my unpublished PhD thesis (unfortunately it is in Hungarian), but if you need any help or more information about this, please contact me. By the way, this knife handle from Caerwent has also interest for me, because I am preparing an article on this subject.
Best wishes,
David Bartus
