The antler cheek pieces are relatively well known in North Italian Middle
Bronze Age (Terramare Culture). We have approximately 50 bits belonging all
to the MB. Many comes from old excavations and we can't give a more precise
chronology. The only cheekpieces resulting from recent excavations belong
all to the BM3 (BM3 = end of the Italian Middle Bronze Age = around
1400/1350 BC). In the fact, I think that antler cheekpieces appear before,
but for the moment we don't have any irrefutable proof. Thereafter, the
continuous presence of antler cheekpieces being attested during Italian Late
Bronze Age.

To know the types, several of these Italian material have been published in
:

- Woytowitsch 1978 - Die Wagen der Bronze - und frühen Eisenzeit in Italien,
Prähisoriche Bronzefünde (München), 1978, Abt.. XVII, band 1, 133 p., 61 pl.

- Hüttel 1981 - Bronzezeitliche Trensen in Mittel- und Osteuropa, Prähist.
Bronzefünde (München), 1981, vol. XVI, n° 2, pp. 1-209, 50 taf.

- Provenzano 1997 - Produzione in osso e corno delle terramare emiliane,
in: M. Bernabò Brea, A. Cardarelli & M. Cremaschi (Dir.), Le Terramare. La
più antica civiltà padana, Milano, Electa, 1997, pp. 524-544, 6 fig.

The most recent discoveries where the cheekpieces were found in context BM3
unfortunately are not published yet. Afflicted, it's my fault, I have a
light delay in my publications....

I can add that, for the moment, the few rare bits known on the French
territory belong all to an advanced Late Bronze Age.

Noëlle

Some Late Bronze Age cheek-pieces made of antler are known from Baltic
countries:
>From Estonia seven antler cheek-pieces are known: three complete and two
>fragmentary pieces from Asva (two of them are on the added photo), one from
>Iru (both are fortified settlements) and one fragment from the stone cist
>grave of Proosa. Some fragments of cheek-pieces of similar shape have been
>found also in Latvia, e.g. Brikuli and Mukukalns, and Lithuania, e.g.
>Petresiunai.
Best wishes,
Heidi
