[Bonetools] Roman Period finds

Dear Erika
1. The long fluted piece is indeed an inlay shaped as a Doric column shaft. It was probably part of a larger scene of architectural character, common in Roman-Byzantine art (in bone carving, lead coffins, pottery lamps etc.)as well as on Islamic metal work. I published several bone carvings shaped as columns from Caesarea: Ayalon, E. 2005. The Assemblage of Bone and Ivory Artifacts from Caesarea Maritima, Israel... (BAR IS 1457). Oxford, Fig. 37 (and see discussion and references pp. 88-89, 93). An exact parallel to your piece (but 26 mm long) is Fig. 37:351. Another piece with vertical flutes, 153 mm long (but with a base and capital) is No. 352 there. (Alice and Marie have the book). Another parallel comes from a tomb in Haifa, Israel: Dussaud, R. 1912. Les monuments Palestiniens et Judaiques, Musée du Louvre. Paris.
2. The small piece with a hole (which is broken; originally it was cylindrical) is, as Sabine already wrote you, one of several parts of a hinge of a box, small cabin etc. See discussion and references (which include good restorations) in Ayalon 2005:44.
Hope that the remote Provincia Palaestina was of little help,
Etan Ayalon

Subject: [Bonetools] Roman Period finds
Dear All,
I would like to ask your help with two
semi-cylindrical objects (see the pictures). They were
found in Roman Period features in South Italy. I
thought of inlays, especially with the ribbed Object
1, but can not find any parallels.
All ideas and references are welcome. Thank you in
advance. Have a nice weekend.
Erika
