Dear Sian!
The university of Vienna has an atmospheric SEM especially designed for
archaeological objects (no sputtering, a big chamber). With M.Kucera (a
physiscist) we did some promising photographs of worn surfaces of
mandible skates. The main experiences as for optimal results, however,
until now have been collected from metal and textile objects. You could
contact him (matthias.kucera at univie.ac.at); he will be back in office by
early december, or M.Mehofer( Mathias.Mehofer at univie.ac.at), the
archaeologist in charge of the machine, for details.
all the best
Karl
