Dear Ian, Drilled phalange are common in Upper Paleolithic and some
are known in Neolithic series. They are interpreted as hunters'
wisttles. See Dauvois, in french, which makes a good description of
the features of this implement ( 'Préhistoire d'os. Recueil d'études
sur l'industrie osseuse préhistorique offert à Henriette Camps-
Fabrer' (Julien M., Averbouh A., Ramseyer D., Bellier C., Buisson D.,
Cattelain P., Pathou-Mathis M., Provenzano N.), Aix-en Provence, 1999).
Ethnological litterature mentions also the use of this kind of
objects (Siberia, Alsaka, etc.). I cannot precise any title. Perhaps
in Lemoine 1999 BAR ?
