Dear WBRG members,
Ours is the pleasure to invite you for the next meeting of our group that will
take place for five days during the first week of September 2005 in Veliko
Turnovo, the mediaeval capital of Bulgaria (see attachment 1).
Along with the plenary sessions we have planned a number of parallel
activities:
* thematically focused exhibition, representative for the bone
industries from prehistoric to late mediaeval times, including the
finds from several archaeologically recovered bone workshops. It
will be hosted by the Veliko Turnovo branch of the Archeological
Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences,
* throughout the meeting certain amounts of bone and antler will be
at the disposal for performing experiments and exchanging
experience between the participants. Kiril Tomanov, a modern
bone carver, kindly suggested to lend us his workshop,
instruments and experience (see attachment 2),
* the region of Veliko Turnovo is rich with excavated archaeological
sites and ethnographic complexes. The short distances (within
30km) allows us to offer excursions daily,
* the Archeological Museum of Varna, on the Black sea coast
(hosting among others, finds from the 5th Millenium BC Varna
necropolis, famous with the earliest accumulation of worked gold
in the history of mankind, as well as excellent finds from the
ancient city of Odessos), also suggested us the opportunity to
arrange an exhibition representative for the worked bone from all
the periods and sites preserved in its depots,
* we hope to be able to use the opportunity provided by the
planned thematical exhibitions and to publish an album
representative for the diachronical development of the bone
working in Bulgaria that should be available already by the time of
    the meeting.
We are still at the stage of evaluating the organizational possibilities
and later on we will send you more detailed program.
Recently we received a positive sign from an established American
foundation eager to support our meeting with a grant, which would
allow us to cover the travel and accommodation expenses of some of
our colleagues who cannot expect support from other institutions, as
well as for the organization of the parallel events. Conditio sine qua
non to submit the application is the inclusion of ca. 30 names of
participants, their institutional affiliation/country and provisional
subjects to demonstrate the scope of the meeting. This is not a call for
papers but call for announcement of interest from your side. So,
please do not hesitate to respond.
The deadline for the submission of applications is 30th of May 2004.
Providing opportunity for participation of broader audience of younger
scholars was the basic argument for the decision, taken in 2001 at
Basel, to organize the forthcoming meetings of the WBRG in Eastern
Europe. Now, there is the opportunity to do something more than
offering cheaper accommodation and we appeal for more activity
submitting the proposals for your participation in the next event
because Bis dat qui cito dat!
We hope to see you all next year in Bulgaria,
The organizers – Milena Stancheva and Petar Zidarov
