The Committee of Nomenclature of Prehistoric Bone Industry (IUSPP)
The first international symposium on prehistoric bone industry took
place at the abbey of Sénanque (Gordes, Vaucluse, France) in April 1974.
Thanks to Henriette Camps-Fabrer, the Committee of Nomenclature of
Prehistoric Bone Industry was created at the end of this symposium.
The aims of this committee were to find some elements of comparison
between the numerous bone objects, which were discovered in the European
prehistoric deposits, and to propose a chrono-cultural classification of
these pieces. The committee would like also to establish some rules
regarding: the orientation, the measuring, the definition and the
description of the multiple listed pieces, with a view to draw up some
typological lists. The latter would be grouped per family.
The idea to write some typological cards, which would be published in the
form of separated books, was proposed and accepted in October 1976.
>From 1978, several researchers were invited to participate in the meetings
and the working out of these cards. Today, the committee includes about
twenty active members.
Headed by the IUSPP since 1984, the committee appeals to the specialists of
bone industry who come from France and various foreign countries.
The published books (see list below) are the fruit of a collective work,
which is the result of long debates during the meetings. These cards
constitute above all a basic documentation that is absolutely necessary for
all the researchers who carry out specialised studies on bone industry.
Within the committee, a work group concerning not very elaborated bone
tools was created by E. Aguirre, and took over by M. Patou-Mathis in 1983.
This group deals with taphonomic problems that are linked to the
determination of bone pieces (origin and history). Ten symposiums were
organized in France and abroad (USA, Belgium, Germany, and Italy) and the
proceedings were published. Currently, this group comprises 220 members and
28 countries are represented there.
In 1997, H. Camps-Fabrer quit the chairmanship of the committee. She
left her position to a triumvirate that is made up of D. Ramseyer (LATENIUM,
Neuchâtel, Switzerland), P. Cattelain (Malgré Tout Museum, Treignes,
Belgium), and M. Patou-Mathis (Institute of Human Palaeontology, Paris,
France).
At present, some studies are underway and are going to be include in
different books that are entitled:
- Techniques and raw materials;
- Smoothers and spatulas;
- Music instruments;
- Pikes and mining tools;
- Perforated heavy tools made of antler;
- Mobiliary art (anatomical support and technique);
- Spears (Post-Palaeolithic);
- Barbed elements of northern Europe.
The themes that are dealt with by the committee had evolved over the
years. The first books were focused on a classical typology. Now, the
techniques, the taphonomy, the ethnographical parallels, the experimental
archaeology and the hypothesis about use are also emphasized.
During the IUSPP Congress (Liège, Belgium, 2001), the committee
organized a symposium (1.6) called: ³L¹industrie osseuse pré- et
protohistorique en Europe. Approches technologiques et fonctionnelles².
The Committee of Nomenclature of Prehistoric Bone Industry is open to
all the French and foreign researchers who are interested in the subject.
