2nd Meeting of the Worked Bone Research Group
Budapest 1999

CIRCULAR I (to be sent by snail mail as well)

Call For Papers!

In February of 1997 the Worked Bone Research Group
founding members held a meeting and decided to hold the next
conference in Budapest at the beginning of September 1999.

Accomodations

It now seems likely that the small simple hotel complex near
our home in Buda will be available at that time. It has the advantage of
providing reasonable housing for those willing to double up (c. a. 2 x 15
people) and a serviceable lecture room. The manager could not quote
exact rates for that far in the future but at the moment a double room
there costs about US $30.00 per night. Other accommodations are
available in the area for those wishing more privacy but these also cost
more. We would have to rent the conference room separately. Based
on past experience the hotel will also provide breakfast and lunch, the
price of which could be added to the conference fee .

Scientific program

From the responses I have received to our notice in the EAA
journal, I think we will have enough papers for a three day conference
with ten papers (20 minutes+10 minutes discussion) each day. It would
be best to keep participation on the low side so we can really have a
chance to speak with each other. To avoid parallel sessions, people
beyond the 30 paper limit may be encouraged to present their work in a
poster session.

Topics

I personally would like to see papers from archaeozoologists
and archaeologists - prehistorians and proto-historians alike. As a
discipline we need to really pay attention to the special points of view
and problems inherent in all the different approaches embodied by
these four kinds of researchers.

I would like to propose the following topics for sessions but would
welcome any other suggestions:

I. Procurement and Use of Raw Material
II. Manufacturing Techniques
III. Methodologies for Studying Manufacture and Use Wear
IV. Problems of Studying Materials in the Field versus in the
Laboratory
V. Reports on Specific Prehistoric Assemblages
VI. Reports on Specific Proto-Historic Assemblages

Social Events

As things stand now I cannot promise any kind of excursion
outside the city unless there is a keen demand and people are willing to
pool monetary resources to hire a bus. Within the city it should be
possible to visit the Roman Aquincum Museum. Otherwise, there is a
nice open-air museum quite close to Budapest in Szazhalombatta
featuring reconstructions of Hungarian Bronze Age houses, an Iron
Age tumulus which has been opened to the public and nearby Bronze
and Iron Age earthworks.
An informal conference dinner could be organized at the
hotel or one of several neighborhood restaurants if people are
interested.

Financing

Once the responses start to come in I will be better able to
estimate expenses. I expect to pay for all my mailing costs etc. from the
conference fees (to be collected on arrival). These will in turn be
dependent on the actual number of participants. Given the lack of
external funding in Hungary at the moment everyone will have to look
for there own sources of funding for the meeting. In turn, I will try to
keep things as inexpensive as possible.
I will also be glad to provide letters of support to anyone who may need
them.
